Inside the Imaginarium: Behind the Scenes With Fantasy Romance Author Vexx Que

A Few Truths (and a Few Shadows)

I’ve always believed every writer is made of two things:

the truths we share freely, and the shadows we save for later.

This space will hold a little of both.

Before we go any deeper into the Imaginarium, let me introduce myself properly…

So here are a few truths.

I’m tall for a woman—5'10”—which means I’ve spent a lifetime seeing the world from a slightly different angle. Maybe that’s why I gravitated toward stories that tilt reality, crack the surface, or reveal the strange light beneath ordinary moments.

I walk every day, usually an hour or more. It’s my meditation, my plotting time, my way of eavesdropping on the world without looking like I’m trying. I’ll walk anywhere I can—grocery stores, errands, the days when Chicago weather decides to behave.

When the destination is too far or the grocery bags are too heavy, I’ll drive, but walking is who I am.

Speaking of weather: I was born and raised in Chicago and still live just outside the city, in the northern suburbs. Chicago shaped me—its grit, its contradictions, its stubbornness, and its beauty. It’s a city that can bruise you and inspire you on the same day. I like that kind of duality in people, too.

At home, I’m usually followed by Prince, my tiny Yorkie with the attitude of a monarch and a wardrobe bigger than mine. Dressing him up brings me an amount of joy I refuse to defend.

I enjoy films—watching them, breaking them apart, admiring the structure behind the spectacle. Maybe that comes from my BFA in Photography/Film/Electronic Media from UIC, where I learned to see narrative in shadows, framing, and silence. I also have an MFA in Creative Writing, because somewhere along the way I realized I didn’t just want to watch stories—I wanted to build worlds.

When I’m not writing, I read. A lot. Books, audiobooks, interactive fiction games… if it has a world, I’ll wander through it.

I dance.

I cook most of my meals at home.

I don’t eat sugar anymore, and I stick mostly to keto—not because I’m trying to be mysterious, but because I feel better when I do.

I also collect porcelain and crystal jesters—delicate, dramatic little creatures with a flair for theatrics. I love Cirque du Soleil for the same reason: beauty and danger wrapped inside performance.

These are the truths I’ll offer you for now.

The shadows?

I’ll tell you those over time.

Some through blog posts.

Some through the characters I write.

And some, you’ll have to guess.

Welcome to my corner of the world.

Let’s see what we discover together.
